I first came across LATIN MAFIA just a week before their El Paso show. While scrolling through YouTube, I stumbled upon a COLORS video titled LATIN MAFIA - Siento que merezco más | A COLORS SHOW. It had been a year or two since I last watched one of their sessions, but knowing I’d been approved to photograph the band, I decided to click on the video to simply get a better understanding of the band. Literally less than a minute in, the song completely pulled me in. I paused the video and switched over to hear the studio version instead. That’s when I discovered they had recently released their debut album, Todos los días todo el día, which had only been out for three months. I gave the album a listen, and to my surprise, I was immediately immersed in their genre-blending, boundary-pushing sound. I mean never in my life had I ever heard Mexican artists create and push this kind of sound before. If anything, the album gave me the same feeling as when I first listened to Rosalía’s Motomami, which, in fact, took first place as my favorite album of the year back in 2022.
Anyways, anyways, anyways let me tell you about their show! So over the span of seven years shooting live music, this was by far the most energetic, chaotic, and difficult set I’ve ever had to photograph. The constant flashing strobe lighting, paired with their dark set, made it incredibly challenging to shoot yet there’s always this intruiging rush when shooting shows like this. I mean for the certain limitations I had I think I did pretty good covering their set, especially shooting the first photo-burst that plays on top of this page.
